A turbocharger is a turbine-driven forced charge intake control system that increases the efficiency and output of an internal combustion engine by forcing additional gas into the combustion chamber.
This system has complex constructional features and requires a high degree of manufacturing precision in order to achieve greater engine efficiency and at the same time simplify engine size.
The raw material for the high temperature side of the turbocharger needs to be able to withstand heat of approximately 1300°C. This is the fundamental reason why austenitic stainless steel is generally chosen for petrol engines. The production and processing of abrasive raw materials is generally characterised by very short and irregular blade life, uneven wear and difficulties in achieving tight dimensional tolerances for the product workpiece.
